Fly Fishing with Old Moe Guide Service
Old Moe Guide Service is a small, very personable, Green River flyfishing guide service operating on Utah's Green River for 26 years. Our Green River flyfishing guides are experienced and professional.
From its source high in Wyoming's Wind River Mountains, the Green River runs south into
Flaming Gorge
Country and Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The Green River then flows crystal clear from
Flaming Gorge Dam, offering consistent temperatures and excellent year-round flyfishing.
World renowned for its abundance of Rainbow, Cutthroat and Brown trout, this clear
stretch of the Green River offers some of the best tail-water flyfishing in Utah. The
average size of these fish will be from 16 to 19 inches, and can weigh from 2 to
4 pounds!
There are 28 fish-able miles of the Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam. The 28 miles
are divided into 3 sections, each with its own personality:
- The "A" section starts below Flaming Gorge Dam and flows 7 miles through
the spectacular and rugged lower part of Red Canyon to Little Hole. This section
offers the highest % of fish per mile and easy access, but also receives the most
traffic, causing flyfishing to vary from day to day.
The "B" section is more remote, starting at Little Hole and flowing 9 miles into Browns Park taking out at the Indian Crossing boat ramp. The
terrain changes from rugged canyons to a drier desert park. The fishing pressure
and rafting traffic decreases. The U.S. Forest
Service maintains camp sites on this section, which allows for quality overnight
camping trips.
- The "C" section flows 12 miles through Browns Park, once a haven for
outlaws, to Swallow Canyon boat ramp. There are several floats in this section, all
more open, with less fish per mile, but produces very challenging flyfishing with long
casts, long drifts, wonderful scenery and a very good chance to catch a BIG fish.
Suggestions - if you are new to the sport of flyfishing, we suggest you have casting
lessons before you come, if possible, or let us know so we can set up lessons. Good
casting allows for more fly fishing time on the water once we are on the Green River, and may
also save you from the frustrations of learning to cast and getting a good drift
at the same time.
